Music Industry Establishes New Royalty Rates (what's the catch?)
by Mike Masnick
"from the seems-like-it dept on Friday, April 13th, 2012 @ 2:15PM There's been some buzz in music circles about the news that the RIAA, the NMPA (music publishers) and the DMA (digital music companies) have reached an "historic" agreement on mechanical royalty rates, potentially avoiding what often is a contentious rate setting process at the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB). The CRB still needs to approve the deal, but the fact that an agreement was reached outside of having to go through such a contentious process, where the results often seem arbitrary and disconnected from reality, is mostly a good thing..." How Much Are Artists Getting Paid for Shows?
The music industry just like any other form of business has changed over the years in many ways. But one of the major aspects of change in hip hop particularly is the way in which the artists make their money. In the 1990's and early 2000's, rappers had to take the traditional route to rake in their paper but in recent years a number of artists' salaries have been based on the performances and shows they put on for their fan base, We see the lavish lifestyles these rappers live and it leaves us to wonder how much they could be making every time they take the stage for a live performance. When you factor in a tour and the nightly salary they take in, it comes out to a rather surprsing figure. So check out the list and see how much some of hip hop's biggest stars make to perform on a daily basis. FULL ARTICLE HERE

Black Musicians & Piracy: friends or foes?
"We're distributing online and on the streets," Harrison said in a baritone voice on the awakening street. "People got to know who you are... all the greatest did this: NWA, Wu-Tang Clan, this guy 50 Cent." As his eyes scan the street for potential buyers, Harrison is talking piracy now, and his rapid-fire speech slows to hammer home each point. "I take the good and the bad, man. You know?" Harrison said. "On the negative side, [music pirates] stole some money, but on the positive side, it was good promotion. You get people out there downloading your tracks, and they know who you are. [Napster] robbed us, but at the same time they made their billions, maybe thousands more people got to know who I am." FULL ARTICLE HERE
Santorum suspends campaign...HE QUIT YALL
Standing before a bank of cameras at a hastily called press conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, Rick Santorum spoke about miracles. As he often does, he spoke about his faith in God and about his family, especially his disabled three-year-old daughter Bella, recently out of the hospital after a weekend health scare. But the miracle reporters were there to hear about was his unlikely presidential campaign, which came closer than anyone else’s to toppling the Goliath that is Mitt Romney’s candidacy. That miracle, Santorum said, was at an end. “We made a decision over the weekend, that while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign today, we are not done fighting,” he said....FULL ARTICLE HERE
